Currency Conversion Tips When Traveling Abroad

Everything you need to know about handling money internationally

Traveling should be about experiences, not worrying about money. Here's everything you need to know to handle currency like a pro and save hundreds on your next trip.

Before You Go

1. Research the Local Currency

Know what you're dealing with before you land:

  • What's the currency code? (USD, EUR, THB, etc.)
  • What's the approximate exchange rate?
  • What denominations exist? (Some countries have coins worth $1+)
  • Is USD/EUR widely accepted as backup?

2. Get a Travel-Friendly Card

The single best thing you can do is get a card with no foreign transaction fees:

  • Credit cards: Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture, Amex Gold
  • Debit cards: Wise, Revolut, Charles Schwab

These cards save you 2-3% on every single purchase abroad.

3. Notify Your Bank

Nothing ruins a trip like a frozen card. Call or go online to:

  • Add a travel notice with your destinations and dates
  • Confirm your daily withdrawal limits
  • Get their international support number (save it offline)

4. Exchange Some Cash Before You Go

Arrive with a small amount of local currency for:

  • Taxi/transport from airport
  • Tips
  • Small purchases if cards don't work

How much? Equivalent of $50-100 is usually enough for the first day. Use Wise or your bank — not the airport.

While Traveling

🚫 The #1 Rule: Avoid Airport Exchanges

Airport exchange booths have the worst rates anywhere — often 10-15% markup. Their "0% commission" signs are misleading; they make money on terrible exchange rates.

If you arrive without cash, use your card for a taxi or find an ATM in town.

ATM Tips

  • Use bank ATMs — Standalone ATMs in tourist areas often charge extra fees
  • Withdraw larger amounts — Reduces per-withdrawal fees
  • Decline the conversion — When the ATM asks "Convert to your home currency?" ALWAYS say NO. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion and adds 3-5%
  • Check for skimmers — Wiggle the card slot before inserting

Paying by Card

  • Always choose local currency — If the terminal asks "Pay in USD or EUR?" choose the LOCAL currency
  • Keep a backup card — In a different pocket/bag than your main card
  • Visa/Mastercard work almost everywhere — Amex is less accepted internationally

Cash vs Card: When to Use Each

Use Card For:

  • Hotels and restaurants
  • Large purchases
  • Online bookings
  • Rental cars (need card anyway)

Use Cash For:

  • Street food and markets
  • Taxis in some countries
  • Tips
  • Small shops that don't take cards

Country-Specific Tips

Europe (EUR, GBP, CHF)

  • Cards accepted almost everywhere
  • Contactless payment is very common
  • Tipping is less expected (often included)
  • Switzerland (CHF) is expensive — budget accordingly

Japan (JPY)

  • Still heavily cash-based society
  • 7-Eleven ATMs work with foreign cards
  • No tipping culture
  • Keep coins — ¥500 coins are valuable (~$3.50)

Southeast Asia (THB, VND, PHP, IDR)

  • Cash is king for street food and small shops
  • Large malls/hotels take cards
  • Some currencies have huge numbers (1 USD = ~25,000 VND)
  • Negotiate in markets — but be respectful

Latin America (MXN, BRL, etc.)

  • Mix of cash and card depending on area
  • USD often accepted in tourist areas (but at bad rates)
  • ATM fees can be high — withdraw larger amounts

Common Scams to Avoid

  1. "Broken" card machine — They swipe, claim it failed, swipe again = double charge
  2. Too-good exchange rates — Street changers may use sleight of hand or counterfeit bills
  3. Dynamic Currency Conversion — Always pay in local currency when asked
  4. "Special tourist rate" — There's no such thing; it's a worse rate
  5. Bill switching — Count your change, know what the bills look like
